Perlite is a mineral growth substrate made from glass-like volcanic rock with high water content. The product is created by heating the rock granules at high temperature and thus greatly expanding their volume. The steam pressure created causes the rock granules to expand to up to twenty times their original volume. Its color is pearl white, perle in French.

Perlite does not contain any radioactive elements or heavy metals; hence, it does not pose a health hazard. Perlite is used as a growth substrate or raw material in organic growth mixtures.
